We met on the apps. Ben drove 70 miles to meet Sarah in Jamaica Plain. We walked the Arboretum and discovered that we both went to Wright State in 2006. We picked sushi for lunch and couldn’t stop talking.

In a super-secret twist, Sarah had a hernia and would cringe in pain when Ben asked if she was having fun. She kept insisting, “Yeah, I’m fine, I’m having a good time.” Sarah thought she just had a stomachache and was too much of a lady to talk about her chronic stomach issues on a first date. Plus, she was having a good time.

Ben’s internal monologue: Obviously, she’s gaslighting me.

A few days later, Sarah told Ben about the hernia and said that while she had a good time, she didn’t expect him to wait until she was healed before continuing to date.

To Sarah’s delight, Ben told her, “You’re worth the wait.”

We’ve been talking nonstop ever since — and Ben still checks for hernias before dessert.
